Luxman Cartridges

Luxman, the world-renowned Japanese manufacturer of high-end audio components, has launched a new MC cartridge called the LMC-5. Whilst they have two high quality phono amplifiers, the L-250 and the EQ-500, this is their first new cartridge for 40 years. Combined with their excellent PD-151 turntable, this allows for the natural Luxman sound to extend to vinyl enthusiasts.

It is completely new design with a rigid, one piece aluminium body; the semi-open structure has inverted oval curves that reduce resonances and reflections. Very stiff construction yet light weight at 8.5g.

The solid diamond stylus is a Shibata shape, and, after extensive listening tests, mounted on the solid aluminium cantilever was deemed to give the more neutral tone. The Shibata stylus ensures high detail retrieval with low noise, and secure tracking ability.

The directly wound, symmetrical coils use a UEW coil wire that has a 30 microns radius, the thinnest possible that resists breakage. A single “piano wire” support system is used for low distortion and accurate vibration control.

The measured frequency response is exceptionally linear from 20 Hz to 20kHz compared to many competitive brands which often exhibit a high frequency emphasis from around 8 kHz upwards. We will report on the sound of this new cartridge once we have received our demonstration unit.

Output is a medium 0.4mV and the recommended loading is 40 ohms or more.
