GutWire Audio Cables

Their cables are composed of high purity oxygen-free copper. As with many of our favourite sounding cables, copper delivers the most neutral, transparent and natural musical signal.

Cold-welding (a very high pressure form of crimping) of all connectors is also a unique feature to this cable manufacturer. No solder is employed. They firmly believe in the superior sound of cold-welding in the termination process. During their research process, a listening panel voted unanimously toward cold-welding terminated cables, 10 out of 10 times. Cold welding offer the following benefits: a better defined soundstage, maximum dynamics, real-life midrange and large scale 3D imaging.

A unique wire-weave pattern and the use of finest materials available also contribute to the renowned GutWire sound. All the cables employ a sophisticated shielding to reject Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). Effective shielding assures that the signal is not polluted and with their shielding design, up to 98% of the RFI and EMI are filtered out without any comprise to the audio signal. Result - a very low noise floor.

Some cable manufacturers rely on capacitors, coils or resistors to alter the audio frequencies. Others modify generic cable products with their own connectors. While these approaches work to a certain degree, they impose limitations and some compressive effects. GutWire Audio does not rely on pre-manufactured designs or other additives to achieve the ‘ultimate’ sound.

Their secret is their own unique design, hand-made construction, cold welding, multiple screening, and the use of the best materials in the world.

A large selection of signal cables and power cords exist. The sound improves as you go up the model chain with differences in performance distinctly audible. 

Two new interconnect models have been recently introduced based an a different copper metal and some other technical improvements: Definitive and Consummate. We have compared these to our reference interconnect, the Uno-S, already a superbly transparent interconnect that outperforms many competitive brands at higher prices. The Definitive interconnect is similar in concept to the Consummate but with simpler construction. It has more transparency, wider bandwidth, faster dynamics and effortless speed than the Uno-S which is already exemplary in these characteristics. Fast runs on piano and guitar maintain their composure and are rendered superbly articulate. It takes what the Uno-S does so well to another level. The Consummate interconnect with its individually braided conductors, similar in weave to the Uno-S, lifts this new technology up a few more notches from the Definitive. These new models require particularly long burn-in times, of the order of 500-600 hours, to deliver their optimal performance. Once there, music replay is without artifice, rhythm flows effortlessly and naturally, as if there is no cable at all between source and amplification. 

A new entry level series of power cords called the B-10 Series was introduced in 2021 and has proved very popular. Offering a high level of sonic performance for their price point and comparing well with other brands at much higher cost.  As well as a standard version there are several  B-10 Special Edition models using Furutech mains plugs and IEC connectors. The upgrade is sound quality with the SE variants is very easily heard.

The Congruence and Synchrony interconnects and speaker cables have been upgraded to Congruence Cube and Synchrony Cube models from 2022. We have evaluated the very first samples of the Synchrony Cube signal cables. Whilst recognisable still as the Synchrony sound, there is a noticeable uplift from the Synchrony Square with increased transparency and improved holography. Very neutral tonal balance with no real emphasis of particular frequencies. An extremely linear, wide bandwidth cable. These upgrades takes this model to a higher sound level and is a significant improvement to an already impressive range of signal cables from this brand.

Power cords

The new entry level power cord is called the B-10 Series. As the nomenclature suggests it is made from 10 gauge pure copper conductors. The outer jacket is an attractive mauve colour with a black mesh sheath. 

Construction and finish is, as expected from this high-end cable manufacture, of the highest quality. An initial listening session with a sample not fully burnt in has taken us by surprise. The sound stage was exceptionally large and deep - a characteristic of GutWire Cables anyway - but this was more as would be expected from their reference Cube Series. Tonal balance was very natural and all frequencies presented very linearly. A full bodied bass with excellent texture and extension. The basic version fitted with MS HD 328 UK plug is priced at a very attractive £450. At this price, the sound offered exceeds most other well known brand power cords we have heard up to £1000.

We have commissioned a series of B-10 power cords fitted different models of Furutech plugs and IECs and and are designated B-10 SE - Special Edition. The uplift in sound quality from fitting these Furutech connectors is very significant and the difference between the gold-plated copper and the rhodium-plated copper variant  is easily heard in an audition.

The flagship range of long established power cords is called the Cube Series. These are probably the best sounding power cords we have heard when compared to many of the more famous and heavily marketed audio cables bands. The prime characteristics are: a vast, uncompressed sound picture, enhance bandwidth, lower noise floor hence better detail, and a more natural tonal balance.

GutWire introduced a new range of power cords called the SV Series in 2019. This is a development of the SP Series and replaces it. It will run in parallel with the existing Cube Series, as an additional flagship range. Based on the success of the SP-series, the SV Series is further improved by using new 101% IACS solid-core copper conductor. Natural minerals, based on rare earth compounds, are uniquely employed to absorb RFI and EMI.

The SV Series sound is different to that of the Cube Series. Very similar in terms of overall sound staging, slightly more forward, but with a slight tilt towards the higher frequencies and less bass weight. The choice between the sound of the two Series will be to some extent the customer's taste, and their system's overall tonal character. The SV Series power cords consists of each conductor screened and finished individually and then braided. This leads to a large outer diameter cable and may be ergonomically difficult where equipment is compactly housed and space is limited. There is a more compact version of the SV Series available whereby all the braided conductors are housed in a single sleeve making it more acceptable for UK audio system application. This variant is generally the one ordered by our clients.

There is a new SV-Lite power cord recently introduced. This reduces the entry level price close to that of the Iris Cube. It is a light cable and much more flexible than others in the SV Series or the Cube Series. Apart from offering a superb sound, it is useful for those equipment supports where space at the rear is limited. It is also a good alternative to the B-10 Series of power cords which does have a stiff outer jacket, albeit at a higher price.

Ground Cables

Simply attach the RCA or XLR, plug end to any spare input socket on your integrated amplifier or pre-amplifier. The mains plug end goes into any spare wall socket, or into a mains distributor. This creates the shortest route to ground from the circuit boards and introduces a different ground potential into the system. It is best to avoid plugging into mains conditioners or regenerators and these components tend to reduce the effectiveness of the ground cables.

Only the earth pin in the mains plug is connected to the ground part of the RCA/XLR connector, or to a spade; the live and neutral pins are completely sealed off inside the mains plug. Obviously, it would be completely inappropriate to transmit AC voltage to a component's chassis.

It takes moments to hear the sound stage increase in depth and width, the tonal balance has more weight and is more natural, less "hifi".Image focus is better, Increased transparency results in better resolution of fine detail.

The first place to try is the pre-amplifier. This is heart of any audio system with all other components connected to it. One Ground Cable produces the largest effect. A second one can provide further useful sonic gains and is best employed in source component: a CD player, a DAC or a phono stage.

Experiments have shown that trying either left or right input sockets to a channel can gives a slightly different sonic results. It is because most circuit boards are not symmetrical in layout unless truly dual mono is design. Just choose the one you like the sound of best. If your electronics are truly dual mono in layout, there is a further benefit from using two ground cables of your choice. 

Far more effective than the passive EntreQ Tellus grounding box and cables, or the Vertex equivalent, or the active Telos Ground Box. No compression of dynamics, or added colouration, which can occur with these alternative grounding systems.

An elegant and simple solution; a single cable does it all.

The Perfect Ground cable is made from multi-strand high purity oxygen free copper. The new version of the Perfect Ground cable is now fitted with Furutech FI-1363 G UK plug or Wattgate Gold Schuko plug for enhanced performance and quality.

The Ultimate Ground takes the construction and the performance to a higher level using a small number of solid core conductors made from a special copper. There is more shielding and anti-resonance damping in the outer jacket. The connectors can be RCA, XLR, spade, clip or coaxial. RCA connector is the most popular; other types available to order. The mains plug can be either Furutech FI-1363 G UK or Wattgate Gold Schuko and are filled with a natural mineral Binchō-tan which provides resonance damping.

A new variant of the Ultimate Ground cable is now available called the Ultimate Ground Crystal Edition. This model uses the new 101% IACS solid-core copper conductors incorporated in the SV Series of power cords. It offers a sound that is slightly higher in tonal balance whilst still producing the same depth of sound stage and better image focus as the regular Ultimate Ground Cable

The Consummate Ground cable takes the GutWire ground cable technology to greater heights, particularly in the area of holography. Whilst the Ultimate Ground offer superb sound staging, the Consummate Ground creates a bigger stage, both left and right but most importantly in the depth, the level of transparency increases and tonal balance is much fuller. Instruments and vocalists are truly in their own space with textures and decay of notes clearly displayed. It is possible to imagine the full dimensionality of each instrument. Piano in particular is rendered in such a way the shape, position and size of the instrument is easily perceived within the recorded venue. Singers are more than just a voice, there is a person standing there in space.

The Consummate Ground cable requires a longer burn-in time than either the Ultimate Ground or the Perfect Ground. Our listening tests have shown this is approximately 120-200 hours to give optimum performance compared to 50 hours for the other two models. This is achieved once connected to an electronic component that is either turned fully on or in standby mode. Hence this burn-in time is achieved in approximately 5 to 9 days. For this reason, customers requiring a home trial prior to purchase will be sent a fully burnt-in demonstration model. If satisfied with the ground cable effect, this will need to be returned and exchanged for a new sample.
