GoldenEar Technology loudspeakers

We have recently decided to add GoldenEar Loudspeakers to our portfolio, from their Triton Series Towers. GoldenEar have been manufacturing loudspeakers since 2010 but the co-founder, Sandy Gross, is an industry legend.

The goal of the company was to deliver maximum value to the consumer in an elegant cabinet. This has been facilitated through some very interesting designs. The drivers are manufactured in house and will not be found elsewhere. This is normally a trait of manufacturers at higher price levels than GoldenEar.

The in-house HVFR™ (High-Velocity Folded Ribbon Tweeter) has been designed and voiced to deliver a silky, smooth delivery, whilst maintaining clarity. The voicing of the speakers is what particularly appealed and this characteristic will allow long term listening with no fatigue. Too many speaker designs today are overly forward and bright, a characteristic that does not appeal. This can be the case for some ribbon-tweeter based speakers but not so with GoldenEar.

The reference tweeter is found on the two highest models and is a high-gauss version of the HVFR offering even more insight. Our listening tests confirm the tweeters are indeed smooth and moreover have a wide dispersion. Some ribbon tweeters can be very directional, but those employed by GoldenEar give a wider listening sweet-spot which is a bonus when more than one person is listening to music.

The range of custom mid and mid-bass range drivers used across the models have been designed for low distortion and maximum dynamics. Some offer very interesting designs, including GoldenEar’s Multi-Vaned Phase Plug (MVPP), to deliver more controlled dispersion.

Bass response is a real strong point for this series. All have bass drivers, along with passive radiators. Implemented correctly, as in this case, this can produce a much more linear frequency response. The passive radiators avoid any port-noise associated with reflex ports, often found on more conventional dynamic designs.

The first two speakers in the range are all passive designs, with those further up the range offering in-built subwoofer amplifiers, allowing the user's own amplifier to run just the mid and high frequencies. The inbuilt amplifiers become increasingly more powerful as you go up the model range providing exceptional grip and dynamics to low frequencies performance that the Triton Series can deliver.

A further advantage of this design is that, in-effect, you have multiple subwoofers. This means that the speakers couple to the space more effectively, giving more even bass around the room than a single, separate subwoofer would.

The entry point into the range consists of the all-passive Triton 7, which has bass from around 29 Hz. This drops to down to an impressive 12 Hz, with the flagship Triton Reference active speaker.

The cabinets have a narrower front baffle than at the rear. This avoids standing waves propagating within the structure and assists in creating a better holographic presentation. The two top speakers in the range, Triton Reference and the Triton One.R, both have a hand finished  piano black lacquer on a one-piece monocoque cabinet. The other models are finished in a mix of piano black and black cloth.

In our listening tests the Triton Series surprised us with just how refined these speakers are at their respective price points. With such complicated designs, with multiple drivers, integration can be tricky. The Triton Series speakers are excellent in this regard. One of the advantages of designing the drivers in-house is that the desired attributes for the actual implementation can maximise the ease of driver integration. The crossover can therefore be less complicated, enhancing clarity. The Triton Series are certainly very transparent and deliver a wide and deep sound stage. Vocals are delivered with confidence and have good tonality. Excellent bass response across the model range will appeal to those that require such from their music.
