Hegel D50 DAC with DAC-Loop functionality

Hegel have introduced a stand-alone DAC to their portfolio, affectionately known as the Raven, a nickname comes from Norse folklore associated with revealing hidden truths. Hegel with their D50 DAC aim to do the same with its musical insight.

The design is a minimalist affair in keeping with other Hegel products. Build quality is the level of Hegel’s reference equipment, and by removing the pre-amplifier and focusing on the DAC technology itself this is a real step up from their previous reference HD30 DAC.

The unit itself is designed to be as low in distortion as possible. The chassis houses 2 toroidal transformers, shielded in a separate steel compartment, to minimise stray RFI noise. Their output is also filtered before entering the unit, further lowering noise.

To further drive down noise and minimise signal path lengths, the DAC itself, ESS’ new, flagship, 2-channel 9039Q2M chip, is housed on a separate circuit board which is raised above the rest of the electronics. The resulting digital processing is very accurate and clean of unwanted digital artifacts.

Hegel are using no less than three separate master clocks to ensure timing errors and jitter are kept to an absolute minimum.

Hegel have implemented a new technology what they call Synchronised Up-sampling, as opposed to more usual, lesser performant, asynchronous up-sampling of other brands. These better-timed digital signals minimise jitter and boost performance.

The Linear Phase ‘LineDriver’ output stage has a high current capacity and low output impedance to be able to drive all types of signal cables and equipment. Hegel has designed the crucial analogue low pass filter and line driver circuits to preserve the highest possible dynamic range free from distortion and noise.

DAC-Loop

The D50 has a DAC-Loop which, when connected to Hegel’s top-level integrated amplifiers, allows the internally-streamed digital music to pass via the D50 DAC. The DAC-Loop utilises the digital output connection and menu functions of the amplifiers to pass the internally-streamed digital music to the D50 DAC. By utilising the latest Hegel DAC technology, this upgrades the in-built streamer, along with all other digital inputs, resulting in a superior sound quality. Essentially future-proofing the amplifier.

This DAC-Loop feature is available in the current H400 and H600 amplifiers but was also included in some older models including H300, H360, H390 and H590, which means that owners of these can benefit from the latest Hegel technology.

In our listening test we have found the D50 to be a very dimensional performer. The sound stage it creates is textured, and due to the low noise floor low level fine details are revealed. It has the expected Hegel sonic signature, marginally on the warm side of neutral, and free from digital glare, making for a non-fatiguing, relaxed, listen.

Fyne Audio SuperTrax and S-Trax super tweeters

Fyne have launched two super tweeters to maximise the performance of their speakers, and those from other brands. Both models use an up-firing, omni-directional super tweeter that uses the same type of 360-degree tractrix diffuser that they use to diffuse the bass from the ports at the bottom of their cabinets.

The new units are: the larger and more technically advanced SuperTrax ; the smaller and more keenly priced S-Trax .

Super tweeters are designed to couple with an existing speaker to widen its frequency range. The advantages of this, when done correctly, are a more airy, effortless feel to the presentation, a more accurate 3-dimentional sonic image, improved tonal accuracy across the frequency range, and better dynamics. It is not just about more life and sparkle in the treble; the effect is heard across the entire bandwidth.

SuperTrax

This is the larger of the two super tweeters and is designed to be time aligned with the Fyne range of loudspeakers, and other brands of loudspeakers with a recessed tweeter. All Fyne speakers have been very accurately measured to recommend the correct position to mount the super tweeter on their own cabinets. ]

Fyne use a 25mm (1-inch) Thin Ply Carbon Diaphragm (TPCD) material for the SuperTrax super tweeter, which has a much higher break up frequency than aluminium, titanium or magnesium which are the more usual metals employed. This means lower distortion and a more extended range – up to 60 kHz. This up-firing driver is mated to a floating 360-degree tractrix diffuser.

Fyne incorporate a sensitivity dial to help match that of the speakers, which gives control of in-room volume. The output level can be tuned to taste and to the location.

In our listening tests, the results were impressive. This is not a subtle improvement and makes the speaker sound like it is from a much higher model range. We have heard traditional, forward-firing super tweeters over the years and found their effect tending towards a “hifi” sound. Forward firing devices have a very narrow dispersion at these ultrasonic frequencies, which give a beam effect and a small sweet spot. The 360-degree design of the Fyne SuperTrax means no sweet spot and delivers instead an immersive sound stage, with wider imaging.

The super tweeters when incorporated with any of our Fyne Audio Special Production models were greatly improved in many areas. Fyne speakers are already capable of a superb 3-dimensional sound-stage with real depth. However, the sense of space and depth increased very clearly with the super tweeter in place. The placement of images in the room was far more accurate. Bass was also tighter, not something expected from adding a super-tweeter for high frequencies.

S-Trax

For those with more traditional non-recessed, baffle mounted, tweeters, including Fyne’s entry level (non-coaxial) offerings, Fyne have now launched the smaller, more affordable, S-Trax super tweeter. Whilst designed for Fyne Audio loudspeakers, this will work with a wide variety of other speaker brands, as the driver can be mounted nearer to the front baffle of the speaker, for more accurate time alignment.

This smaller unit employs a magnesium dome but with a similar, floating, tractrix diffuser as the larger SuperTrax. It also has a sensitivity dial to enable more seamless integration with existing speakers.

In short, these are both superb products, which can deliver profound improvements to the sound of any loudspeaker.

Luxman DA-07x and Soulnote D2 DACs: A Sonic Comparison

These are two of our favourite DACs at the moment, so we thought a head-to-head comparison would be useful to assist choosing between the two.

Both units have all of the usual digital inputs and have analogue outputs on both RCA or XLR (with switchable pin change for XLR on the Soulnote). However, we have always preferred the sound picture when using the non-balanced RCA circuit for its more holographic soundstage and less forward presentation.

Both of these units are chip-based, delta-sigma implementations. All of the expected digital inputs are present: S/PDIF, TOSLINK, Optical or Coaxial, and AES/EBU. As usual, Optical has a maximum resolution of 24 Bits 96 kHz, Coaxial and AES/EBU offers 24 Bits 192 kHz.

To get the maximum resolution on both the Luxman and the Soulnote DACs, USB will need to be used as this will deliver PCM up to 768 kHz and 32 bits and DSD up to 22.5 MHz.

Our listening tests were done using both Luxman 509z and Soulnote A2 amplifiers through GutWire interconnects, speaker cable, power cords, USB and digital coaxial cables.

The speakers chosen for their neutrality and resolving transparency were the Kudos Titan 606 and the Fyne F702SP , with the addition of the new Fyne super-tweeter.

The majority of the listening evaluations were using CD for its superior sound stage abilities and resolution. We used the Luxman D10x as a CD transport, to facilitate this. The performance from the Tidal streaming service, was judged too using Luxman’s own streamer, the NT-07, as well as the Innuos ZENith Mk3 and the ZENith Next-Gen .

All power cords were connected from a Puritan PSM-1512 Special Edition mains purification distributor.

The Luxman DA-07x

The Luxman DA-07x is one of the newer models to our studio. It is an extremely well-built unit, weighing in at a hefty 13 kgs, in a fairly discrete chassis of only 92 mm in height, though around 40cm deep. It has a small dimmable screen on the front, showing input and the sampling rate being played, as well as a toggle to quickly switch inputs.

The digital circuitry is gleaned from their D-07x CD player , an excellent reference player at this price point, coupled with their discrete analogue output stage. The DAC chip itself is interesting, as this is from the range of ROHM semiconductors that has been developed from its inception, with music as a focus. Indeed, the range is called the MUS-IC series. The DA-07x uses two of their flagship chips, one per channel in dual-mono configuration.

The reference clocking system has two ultra-low phase noise clock modules with high precision and low jitter, reducing noise near the oscillation frequency to a minimum.

The DA-07x features Luxman’s highly regulated power supplies, with three separate OI core type transformers, regulation systems and bespoke filter capacitors.

The output stage uses discrete components as opposed to cheaper surface mount items used in lesser DACs. This is a more costly approach but the output stage is the interface with the amplifier and is a very important part of the sonic performance of the DAC. This can be an oversight in many DAC implementations.

Coupled with the new Luxman NT-07 Streamer, the two make for a stylish and high-performing combination.

Our listening session was using Filter D1 on the unit, which was our preferred option.

The Soulnote D2

The chassis for the D2 is far more substantial than that of the Luxman at 160mm in height and weighs in at 17kgs. This looks and feels more like an amp than a DAC. It has the Soulnote distinctive, CNC-machined chassis with a ribbed appearance. This housing is shared by the other Soulnote 2 Series components, the A2 amplifier and the E2 phono-stage. The internal volume is used effectively to keep sensitive components away from each other, minimising noise.

The DAC in this instance uses 4 of the ESS Sabre ES9038PRO chips, with 2 per channel in true differential configuration.

Listening can be done in NOS (non-oversampling) mode or through filters. Our favourite is NOS used for most of our listening but we also thought FIR Filter 2 had some merits.

This unit can be used in stereo mode, as in this listening test, but can also be used in mono configuration where two DACs can be used , one for each channel. In this configuration, stereo separation is practically infinite.

The digital boards are independent structures with one portion connected to the rear panel, allowing for upgrades in the future. The analogue output stage uses separate boards with discrete, selected components on them, ensuring optimal information transfer in order to maximise the sound purity. These are arranged in a dual mono configuration that fully isolates each channel, including the power supply rectifiers.

The internal clock relies on a high performance TCXO boasting stunning phase noise reduction (-121 dB at 10 Hz offset). An external clock could also be used but, with the standard unit’s excellent performance, there would be little point.

Listening test results

The first thing noted was that the Luxman has more density in the sound field with a little more depth than the Soulnote. However, the Soulnote counters with the way it presents the placement of items more accurately within the soundstage. Both DACs produce a wide and deep sound images but with the Soulnote being marginally more forward.

Both the DA-07x and the D2 DACs produce clean and textured bass, with the Luxman being slightly warmer in its bass presentation than the Soulnote. The impression is that the Soulnote sound is slightly more accurate but less forgiving of bad recordings than the Luxman.

Using some well recorded CDs of jazz, rock, and blues genres, rhythmic presentation and coherence appeared to be slightly faster on the Luxman but the Soulnote gave the illusion of a great flow to the music. Dynamic shifts and transient attacks are handled superbly well, with ease, by both.

Classical recordings of piano and violin, often difficult instruments to render naturally with digital recordings, were reproduced with excellent textured and natural timbres. The Luxman delivers slightly more high frequency information with the Soulnote being slightly smoother in this area. This may suit more forward sounding audio components of which there are many examples in today’s marketplace.

Both of these DACs reflect some of the best sounds at the higher end of the market and also demonstrate the care and attention to the quality of the musical reproduction that artisan Japanese manufacturers bring to audiophiles seeking accuracy and less colouration. There is no wrong choice, both are excellent sounding DACs. The choice would be more down to system synergy and personal preference of the delivery. Plus whether your equipment support allows for a DAC of the Soulnote D2’s dimensions.

We have both of these components on demonstration in our studio. As ever, the advice is that a carefully curated audition is recommended to make the final choice.

Fyne Audio Loudspeakers

Fyne Audio was founded in 2017 by experienced speaker designers who had worked for many years for another well-known British manufacturer. The company was infused with lots of industry expertise from the beginning, and, over the years, they have developed a reputation for well-made, high-performance, loudspeakers.

The technology within their line is interesting. With the exception of their entry level range which are more conventional designs, all have Fyne’s IsoFlare driver . This is a coaxial arrangement with the tweeter in the centre of the mid-woofer with shared acoustic centre. The main advantage is very accurate time alignment of these two drivers as they emanate from a single point source. It also assists with a wide stereo dispersion, with an excellent soundstage achieved in locations in the listening room where other loudspeaker brands may not.

Fyne Audio use compression drivers for the tweeters in their coaxial drive units. If not utilised correctly these can be overly forward and unnatural. However, our listening tests showed exactly the opposite was the case. We were impressed by their natural rendition of texture and timbres and airy high-frequency extension – with no edginess and no hint of forwardness. An expansive soundstage layering from the speaker plane rearwards emulating more the concert hall experience. One of the best loudspeakers offering these characteristics we have come across in recent years.

Fyne Audio mid-bass and bass drivers are made from multi-fibre cones. Natural fibre cones have inherent advantages as they are lightweight and naturally damped from the various separate fibres. Their drivers are very fast, delivering superb dynamics without being forward in presentation, whilst maintaining the natural timbres of instruments and voices.

Fyne Audio now have an extensive range of speakers but we have decided to focus on their SP, or Special Production, range, that have upgrades to the drive units, the crossovers, and the cabinets. All Fyne Audio SP models are designed and built in the UK.

Hegel launch new integrated amplifiers: H400 and the reference H600

We now have all of the latest integrated amplifiers from Hegel incorporating some substantial upgrades to their technology and have been very impressed by them, especially the H400 and the H600 reference integrated.

All units benefit from Hegel’s Sound Engine 2 technology which constantly monitors the music signal and removes several sources of distortion, including crossover distortion between the transistors themselves. This technology allows the delicacy and dynamics producing a real presence to the music.

Hegel H400

The new H400 , which takes over from the superb H390 has an improved, bit-perfect DAC which allows for maximising the sound quality from any digital source. It also has a new streaming platform that supports Apple AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, and UPnP. This has allowed the H400 to win the 2024/25 EISA award for Best Premium Streaming Amplifier.

The H400 has a dual-mono design allowing for better channel separation, with a substantial 250 watts per channel at 8 ohms (420 at 4 ohms) and an industry-leading damping factor of 4000. The high value contributes to better control a loudspeakers bass drivers, maximising resolution and dynamics.

Hegel H600

Moving up from the H400 is the reference H600, which has all of Hegel’s expertise incorporated replacing the outgoing H590. The H600 offers a similar DAC and streaming functionality to the H400, described above. However, there are lots of changes which really elevate the performance. Firstly, the amplifier now has an impressive 303 watts per channel at 8 ohms, with around 500 watts at 4 ohms. Despite having only 53 watts per channel more than the H400, the power supply is 50% more powerful than that of the H400 and has 40% more power transistors. This allows the amplifier to feel even more effortless and more refined than the already superb H400.

The larger chassis for the H600 is built entirely from non-magnetic aluminium (including the feet) for maximum noise rejection and is also more rigid than the H400 chassis, where thinner steel is used. Importantly, the H600 has the volume control (attenuator) taken directly from their flagship P30 pre amplifier, which allows for a step up in performance over the outgoing H590. This allows for a more dynamic and detailed rendition of music.

Additionally the larger housing allows for the various sections to be shielded from each other to maximise signal integrity and to enable further noise-rejection. This includes a shielded DAC, a shielded pre-amplifier section, and shielding the main AC input from the rest of the unit.

The component-quality is improved over the already excellent H400, including the quality of the circuit boards themselves.

Finally, there is also an increase in connector quality, including high-end Mundorf speaker terminals and very high-quality RCA connectors.

This is one of the very best integrated amplifiers on the market today. We recommend booking an audition to compare the sonic differences between the H400 and the H600.

The Audio Consultants Musical Event No 8

The Audio Consultants are returning to the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Reading East at Winnersh Triangle
for their Musical Event No 8. This will be held on the Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 July 2024 in the Sandhurst Suite between 10am and 5pm. We are very familiar with his quality venue which allows
for a more comfortable and controlled listening experience for our visitors. The Suite is well proportioned and allows for a good acoustic.

The two sources will be the Origin Live Calypso turntable with their Illustrious tone arm and fitted with a Hana Umami Blue cartridge , and the new CD player from Hegel called The Viking .

The amplification duties will be split between the Soulnote A2 integrated amplifier and the Exposure 5010 pre-amplifier and 5010 dual-mono power amplifiers . The Soulnote A2 amplifier an above average proportion of Class A from a Class A/AB principle.

The loudspeakers will be the new Golden Ear Triton T66 , and the Eggleston Works Emma EVO . Both designs have technology that produces an authoritative sound with good bass extension from modest sized but aesthetically pleasing cabinets.

The Special Edition of the Puritan Audio PSM 1512 made exclusively for The Audio Consultants will, again, be the hub of the mains distribution. These Studio Master mains purification systems not only reduce noise and increase transparency, but also enlarge the holographic sound stage, and greatly enhance dynamics and rhythmic pace.

All the signal cables, ground cables, and the power cords will from GutWire Cables , with digital cables from the extensive range from AudioQuest .

The HRS EXR equipment supports will provide good isolation from acoustic feedback improving image stability, dynamic speed, and overall naturalness of tone.

This new model from Audiolab takes streaming to the next level. This product has been the result of over three years of development to bring out a stable, high-res capable, wired or wireless, streaming solution. The inclusion of Lumin technology in this product elevates this unit above the other streamers in the Audiolab range, which use lower level internal circuits, and use DTS Play-Fi as the streaming engine

Accessing the system is via the Audiolab 9000N App, available on Apple or Android devices. This app oﬀers immediate access to Qobuz and Tidal, with full access to hi-res and MQA content, as well as Spotify, TuneIn internet radio and UPnP music server systems and digital audio ﬁles stored on USB HDD devices. As well as using the Audiolab 9000N app, the 9000N, can also playback via Airplay II as well as Tidal Connect and Spotify Connect for those who prefer the proprietary streaming service app. The 9000N is also Roon Ready .

The 9000N incorporates the ES9038PRO – an eight-channel DAC chip representing the current pinnacle of ESS Technology’s current Sabre range. This is accompanied by proprietary circuitry to make the most of the chip’s HyperStream II architecture and Time Domain Jitter Eliminator technology for maximum dynamic range and ultra-low distortion. The post-DAC active ﬁlter is a critical element, and Audiolab has developed a new circuit that is perfectly tailored to make the most of the ES9038PRO’s architecture.

Equipped with rotary controls and an absence of buttons, the 9000N also implements the 4.3in colour screen, as found in the rest of the 9000 series. The screen displays a variety of information in a more visually appealing way than most other streaming devices, many of which have traditionally relied upon the accompanying app for operational feedback and user control and interface. The 9000N’s display oﬀers full menu controls, an array of options and user settings.

The 9000N offers differing displays which can show the following: format data with resolution, full colour album artwork, or can be set to a VU meter in ‘analogue’ or ‘digital’ formats showing real-time decibel levels for the left and right channels. The display can be dimmed, or turned off completely.

This is a big step up in both build and performance from the 7000 series and we have been very impressed in our initial listening tests. This 9000N Streamer at £2499 delivers a sonic performance above its price point.

New flagship amplifiers - Luxman L-509Z and Hegel H600

We now have received the two new flagship amplifiers from Hegel and Luxman – the H600 and the L-509Z. We have now run both amplifiers in for over 300 hours and have done our first listening tests. For this close evaluation auditioning we invited George Sallit of HiFi Wigwam to participate as he is a fan of Luxman products and has assisted us before with his erudite analysis.

Luxman L-509Z

The Luxman L-509Z is the newest addition to the range replacing the L-509X , a long standing reference integrated amplifier for us. We compared the L-507Z that was introduce last year, and found that there was difference in sound from the new Z Series technology, with the L-509X still being the more holographic and having a more natural tonal balance. See the full review . This time we were able to compare on a more equal basis as they were both L-509 models.

After 300 hours the L-509Z showed a rather bright tonal balance with less bass extension and a less expansive sound picture with the same music played though the L-509X. The X Series is distinctly more transparent than the new Z-Series. The Z Series is less holographic and has a slightly more forward presentation; the soundstage from the L-509X was significantly larger allowing a greater insight into the music. George used the finale from excellently recorded Beethoven’s 9th Symphony (Reference Recordings RR-) and we all agreed that, in this comparison, the older X Series technology sounded better.

I reminded George that at this same stage of burning in, 300+ hours, the L-507Z sounded very similar, and less involving compared to the L-509X. A further period of running-in did close the gap sonically speaking, with a more authoritative tonal balance more typical of what is Luxman evolving. But there is no doubt the Z series has a different sound philosophy to the outgoing X Series: slightly more forward in presentation whilst maintaining a dimensional soundstage. The Z Series amplifiers probably need over 500 hours burn-in time to show their optimal performance potential. We are therefore continuing the burn-in process with the L-509Z. We will revisit this listening session after 500 hours, invite George back to join us then, and report here with an update.

Hegel H600

The Hegel H600 is designed to perform as closely as possible to a separate preamplifier and mono-blocks combination, in a single chassis. It incorporates a state-of-the-art preamplifier section, with the extremely precise volume attenuator found in their reference P30A stand-alone preamplifier.

The run-in H600 does offer a step up in sound quality over the outgoing H590. The overall sonic signature is very much the same in both, an overall slightly warmer tone than from the Luxman or AVM amplifiers we have at the same quality level. Excellent though the flagship H590 is, there is a more transparent and deeper soundstage with the new H600 amplifier. Detail is better resolved and imaging a little better with the newer amplifier. Bass extension and grip was very similar with either amplifier, but none of the speakers we used (Kudos Titan 707 and Ophidian Voodoo) offered a very difficult load. These we would consider medium efficiency but with more demanding speakers, the difference may be more apparent. The wide ranging dynamics of the Beethoven 9th finale was handled well, with a little more inner detail in the mass choir choral passages from the H600. Therefore a worthy successor albeit at a significant price increase to £10,500. Well worth a listen if the budget extends to this price point.

The new DAC in the H600 is a step up from that found in the outgoing H590. The H600 can be a digital hub with optical, coaxial and USB inputs, and will support high end formats such as DSD and MQA decoding technology.

UK Audio Show 2023: Live vs Recording Event update

The recording session on Saturday 7 October will be between 11am and 1pm. There will be a limited number of tickets available to this closed door event at the registration desk.

After a brief talk by Damon Sawyer on his live recording techniques, we will start recording from 11.30. Mim Grey and Alan West will perform some solo sets followed by a series of duets. They will be supported by acoustic bass player Nicholas Bayes. We hope to finish the recording between 12.30 and 1.00pm.

The same ticket holders will be invited back during the afternoon to hear the recording played back through The Audio Consultants audio systems between 2.30 and 3.30pm. This will be, again, a closed door session.

The Audio Consultants systems will feature several new products some shown for the first time at the UK Audio Show:

Once the replay of the recorded tracks has finished, the musicians will perform a live set open to all show visitors from 3.30 to 4.30pm.

Sunday 8 October will be a pure Audio Consultants demonstration room featuring the selected audio systems.

UK Audio Show 2023: The Audio Consultants Live vs Recording Event

We have hosted two Musical Events over the last 9 months in collaboration with Cresent Records, a recording studio in Swindon. Working with their renowned recording engineer Damon Sawyer, we were able to present a live performance to an invited audience that was recorded, balanced and rapidly mixed to a first master within an hour. This was printed to a CD-R and played back in the same recording space through an audio system selected and set up by The Audio Consultants. The sound from the recording was considered by all attendees to be remarkably close to that enjoyed as a live performance.

Due to these successes, we have been invited by Justin Bird of the Chester Group to reproduce this Live vs Recorded Event at the UK Audio Show 2023. Clearly this will be more challenging doing such remotely from a studio environment but Damon Sawyer and The Audio Consultants have worked on a plan together to be able to present this at this UK Audio Show.

We will only be doing this recording session on Saturday 7 October between 11am and 1pm. There will be limited number of tickets available to this closed door event. The same ticket holders will be invited back during the afternoon to hear the recording played back through The Audio Consultants audio system. Further details will be announced later.

The musician performing will be Mim Grey and Alan West. Mim is best known for being “the most beautiful voice to come out of the UK for a long time”. Her music is sensuous, soulful, county-influenced music, “ a subtle fusion of Joni, James Talyor and John Mayer”. Alan has been regarded as having one of the finest country music voices to come out of the UK. His emotional, yet informative, way of singing a story has moved many an audience over the world.

After the closed door sessions, all visitors will be able to hear Mim and Alan performing live during the late afternoon of Saturday. The Sunday will be devoted to listening to The Audio Consultants audio systems only. Whilst not finalised yet, the brands on demonstration will include:

Musical Event No 7 – A review

We hosted two, day-long, sessions of this live music event, a collaboration with Crescent Records in their beautiful recording space in Swindon. This was similar to our Musical Event No 6 but with longer, more relaxed, sessions and with the addition of Fleur Stephenson on vocals to the trio led by Pete Billington.

We heard various arrangements of tunes that were recorded by Damon Sawyer, Crescent Records recording engineer. Over the course of the two days, several tracks were recorded, which included a couple of a retakes to some, which we are likely to include on the final CD to show the organic evolution of a particular musical arrangement.

A trio consisting of piano, acoustic bass (this time being the acclaimed Alec Dankworth), and drums was chosen, as these instruments cover a wide range of the audible spectrum we listen to. For this event, Fleur Stephenson a very fine jazz vocalist to the mix gave an extra dimension and interest. Damon took a lot of care pre-setting some of the microphones prior to our sessions and explained in some detail how he had selected the different microphones for each application, including ambient microphones. The majority were used on the drums, with just a stereo pair on the piano and single microphone for the upright bass. A very fine valve microphone was used for the vocals.

Damon further explained his method of placing microphones, recording, blending, and mastering based on his long experience in the industry, The principal aim being to capture the individual instruments as realistically and as naturally as possible. He explained how he records t PCM 384 kHz/24 bit, controls factors such as audio spill, includes room ambience during the recording, and the EQ and compression techniques he needs to employ in post-production to balance the instruments and in this case, the singer. To be clear, this was a recording session, rather than a live ‘gig’. This was interesting, as Fleur’s projection was nuanced but very quiet. She could hardly be heard in the recording space itself but could be clearly heard in the mixing suite. This gave a great insight into the recording process.

During the sound-check stage, our guests were able to hear a bit of the trio playing and watch Damon balancing and checking EQ prior to the first take. During the recording guests either sat in the studio and were asked to be as quiet as possible, or they could sit with Damon in the mixing suite to hear a more balanced reproduction of the ensemble, with Fleur’s voice being distinct.

Whilst Damon was working on the first mixes of the recording, guests were able to relax and talk amongst themselves, whilst enjoying their lunch. After lunch, we had a second recording session. Post this, we then played back the initial mixes from Damon from the morning session on the system which we brought with us – details below. All agreed how good the sound was including the extremely realistic tone of the piano, which a reviewer (Kevin Fisk) commented on specifically.

At this point we had a discussion around the components in our system and answered questions.

The feedback from our guests was very positive commenting on how much they had enjoyed the event and found it very informative, entertaining and enjoyable. This longer session format seems to have been a benefit, so we will follow this format in future.

We were delighted to have the company of George Sallit (of HiFiWigWam) and Kevin Fiske (of HiFiWigWam and The Ear Magazine), who both thoroughly enjoyed the live music, the presentations and discussions, as well as the comparison of the recording vs our audio system.

The final, more carefully mastered mixes of all of the tracks, will be sent out in due course to all attendees.

Comparing the new Luxman D-07X with the D-10X

We recently had a request from George Sallit, the reviews editor of HiFi Wigwam, to listen to the new D-07X player. George is a big fan of Luxman and recently listened with us to the new integrated amplifier the L-507Z – see previous blog post . We invited him over and had an interesting audio session.

It seemed natural to start with the D-07X playing into the new L-507Z integrated amplifier. The speakers used were the well balance Ophidian Incanto , and the signal cables and power cords were all from GutWire Cables . The isolation supports and chassis noise control were from HRS and kept consistent throughout the listening session.

George used 3 favourite CDs that we all knew well and included the extremely well recorded Beethoven’s 9th Symphony from Reference Recordings and Led Zeppelin’s Dazed and Confused.

The D-07X displayed exceptional control through the L-507Z with all tracks and kept the dynamics and loud passages under control, all handled with ease whether it be the large orchestra or the raw power of the rock band. Very little to criticise as it was a superb sound portraying exceptionally large soundscapes.

We then switched to the D-10X CD player to hear what an extra £5000 brings to the mix. The D-10X produced an even larger soundstage with images more clearly defined. Dynamics and powerful passages handled with more poise and elegance, rendering the more complex passages with ease. A slightly more full bodied balance, and less forward in overall presentation compared to the D-07X.

The final combination of the D-10X CD player with the outgoing L-509X amplifier took the whole sound quality to anther level, as we had expected. The L-509X creating a more organic, slightly less bright sound with an increased holographic presentation.

There is no doubt the Luxman D-07X is an extremely good CD player, rightly recognized as one of the best CD players around the £10,000 mark. But it does not get too close to the exceptional D-10X CD player, which we consider a reference point even compared to many other brands at higher cost. The price difference is without question significant but for many audiophiles wishing to obtain optimal sound quality, it will be worth the extra.

Musical Event No 7 – Studio Session No 2 – 24 & 25 June

Due to the success of our last musical event , we have decided to expand on this theme. Our last Event was held in Crescent Records studio, where we invited a live jazz trio who were recorded and mastered by Crescent Record’s engineer Damon Sawyer. This recording was mixed and transferred to a CD-R which was replayed via an audio system set up in the same space as the initial recording. Subsequently Damon had further enhanced and refined the mix, with our input, and was printed as a CD package, and sent out to all attendees.

We have had very positive feedback from all who attended the previous collaboration, from the musicians at the original event, and more recently from the recipients of the final master CD.

A concern over the last Event was that it might have been a little too technology focused for some guests, so the recordings were kept short and split into separate morning and afternoon sessions. However, during the event, it became apparent that most would have liked a deeper insight into the recording process itself, with more time to ask questions. This next Musical Event with Crescent Records will follow a similar format of recording a live event, mixing, and mastering this to a CDR for playback on an audio system in the same recording space. This time each session will run over a whole day. There will be more time for questions with Damon along with more time to listen and appraise the audio system with other recorded music.

We are again using the same jazz trio led by Pete Billington on piano, with the addition of Fleur Stephenson on vocals. We had very positive feedback on the musicianship of the trio at the last Event, and we are sure the addition of a singer will be of extra interest.

We are limited by the number of people that we can fit around the mixing desk to observe Damon work, but we are now able to offer 20 places for each of the two days. Light refreshments will be provided. Sessions run from 10 am to 5 pm, places can be booked now for Saturday 24 June and Sunday 25 June.

Each day’s session will cost £50 per person and will include:

Professional recording of a live ensemble , including a review of the set up of equipment and mics
Demonstration of mixing and mastering the recorded tracks to CD
Listening to playback of the recording and other music on a bespoke 2-channel audio system in the recording space. This will feature the new Luxman D-07X CD player and the new Ophidian Incanto loudspeakers
Q&A sessions with the recording engineer
Light refreshments and beverages
Following the Event each participant will receive their own CD-R of the final recorded and mixed tracks .

Crescent Records have already adopted some GutWire Cables power cords and Ground Cables which are in permanent use in their recording and mixing studio. Ayre Acoustics CX-8 CD player v 2.0

For us CD offers the best format for the most natural and detailed sound for digital music replay. Ayre Acoustics is still very much focused on CD too. We first heard this CX-8 player in v2.0 version last autumn. It was immediately obvious this was beguiling sound with a most natural presentation and tonally very correct. So much so that we decided to feature it at the UK Audio Show 2022 last October and was one of the reasons our sound there was deemed by many to be the best at that Show. The design and build of this revised CX-8 CD player is first rate, with a beautiful milled, solid aluminium fascia.

The Ayre sound is very holographic with a deep and wide image, that projects beyond the boundaries of the speakers. Never forward, the CX-8 has a satisfyingly rich tone which is not common in other brands at this price point. Vocals are particularly well rendered with a real sense of the emotion of the performance. Piano, a difficult instrument to get right, has the correct weight to the timbres and the intricate harmonics portrayed naturally. This is an exceptionally musical CD player at this price point and it would hold up well against other CD players up to around £10,000. At £5500 the CX-8 v2.0 offers true value for money; a player that can be listened for many hours without fatigue.

For those that require the ability to stream music there are optional digital inputs available for network streaming with the addition of two separate cards, either the Asynchronous USB module or the Ethernet Module.

New Luxman D-07X CD/SACD player

We have recently received this new CD model from Luxman and, as expected, this closely resembles Luxman’s flagship D-10X. The D-07X shares its luxurious build quality in a slightly smaller in height chassis.

The D-07X majors on a wide and deep soundstage which is a prime consideration for our portfolio of products. This is a characteristic with all Luxman products and it is obvious this model has trickle down technology from the D-10X CD player. Tone and timbre are accurately demonstrated, allowing for very realistic renditions of instruments with piano being delivered in a particularly natural way. Vocals have lots of micro-detail, which allows for a closer emotional connection to the artist. Dynamics are first rate with transients being delivered with real speed and attack. The overall presentation is rich and satisfying and will work within a wide range of systems.

The D-07X is closer in quality to the D-10X, but is a significant step up from the D-03X, unsurprising considering the price differentiation. Compared to the D-10X, the D-07X has a slightly more forward presentation but still very much a holographic presentation typical of Luxman. The D-10X, one of our reference players, still delivers more resolution of the finest nuances and textural information but the D-07X is close but at a significantly lower price point of £10,000.

New Incanto loudspeaker from Ophidian

The new floorstander model from Ophidian called the Incanto is now with us and fully run-in. It has very much the trade mark Ophidian sound that drew us to invest in the superb flagship Voodoo.

A smaller cabinet size makes the Incanto more suitable for smaller to medium size rooms but still capable a portraying exceptionally large and deep soundstages. With correct room placement and commensurate electronics and cabling, the sound picture is vast, way beyond the boundaries of the cabinets. Layering backwards from the speakers, the sound is never forward or bright, but with excellent clarity allowing the detail and dynamics of the music to be portrayed with astonishing realism. Even played loud, the speakers never become “shouty”, distorted, or lose their composure. They can be listened to for extended periods without fatigue.

A strong family resemblance to the much larger Voodoo which, unsurprisingly, produces a more extended bass with a little more air to the instruments and voices. The Incanto offers much of this sound from a smaller cabinet at a more affordable price. This speaker will partner any high-end, quality electronics and ancillaries without limiting their performance. Highly recommended for anyone who is considering a loudspeaker in the £5000-7500 price range.

The New Luxman L-507Z amplifier

We have had the new Luxman L-507Z amplifier for a while now and, after a full run-in period, we decided to listen closely to what the new design philosophy the Z Series brings to the sound quality.

The L-507Z essentially replaces both the L-507AXii Class A/AB and the L-590A Pure Class A models. It is the first integrated amplifier to incorporate the new LIFES noise reduction system that is the heart of the Z Series. There is a more detailed description of this new technology on the link below.

The L-507Z took much longer to burn in from new than we would have expected. Instead of a more typical 300-400 hours of music playing this model requires in excess of 500 hours to deliver optimal sound quality.

The sound then became the trademark very open, deep sound stage we expect from a Luxman amplifier with great insight into the musical nuances due to the high level of transparency. The amplifier also has a very tight grip on the bass and controls speaker well with excellent bass extension. Fast transients and dynamics, and speedy recovery enables the rhythmic qualities of the music to come through with ease.

Contrary to the other Class A/AB, or indeed the Pure Class A designs, the L-507Z runs very cool to the touch, not even a little warm. This suggests to us that the design philosophy is now mostly, if not entirely, Class AB, quite a departure from their classic models.

We then compared it to the L-509X , the current flagship integrated amplifier, as we no longer have a sample of the previous L-507AXii. Using a series of CDs we know well which are well recorded with good holographic soundstages, played via the exquisite Luxman D-10X , there are differences. Whilst the new Z series amplifier is delivering a truly excellent and pretty neutral sound pictures, there was a more natural and organic sound picture from the L-509X that is very beguiling still.

We invited over George Sallit who reviews extensively for HiFi WigWam as he is a big fan of Luxman and was keen to hear the new L-507Z amplifier. He brought over just a few CDs which included a very fine Reference Recordings version of Beethoven 9th Symphony and Led Zeppelin’s first album . Eclectic those these two pieces of music may appear, they both were very useful is illustrating the differences in sound quality and presentation that the L-507Z and the L-509X present.

The large scale of the Beethoven recording and the excellent dynamics and holography, a trade mark of Reference Recordings, were portrayed superbly with the L-507Z. The voice and the choir were very lifelike and not overshadowed or overwhelmed by the dynamic orchestral parts.

Led Zeppelin ’s Dazed and Confused illustrated the raw power of this rock band from a straightforward, good recording from the analogue era. The contributions of the individual members of this band were rendered very clearly, with accurate tonality especially from the voice and the acoustic guitar.

The L-507Z showed how good it is with powerful and dynamic music justifying the praise for the new Z technology.

Playing the same recordings on the L-509X reduced the slight tendency towards brightness with the L-507Z, with more nuance and emotion to voices, and better dynamics to individual instruments. Overall a more natural sound, less forward in presentation. The consensus was that L-509X is the better amplifier.

There is no doubt the L-507Z is a superb integrated amplifier and is made to same high level of build quality that Luxman is famous for. It is easy to succumb to the slightly brighter and forward presentation as providing more detail and excitement, but the L-509X is certainly equal on these characteristics, has a more holographic presentation, has slightly better dynamics, and is more slightly more natural in tone.

This comparison is not a strictly accurate as we are comparing a top of the range integrated amplifier with a level below, and with two different design philosophies within them. We look forward to hearing the new L-509Z variant in due course which is unlikely to be available before the latter part of 2023.

The New Audiolab 9000 series

Audiolab have launched a brand new 9000 series of products, which comprises of the 9000CDT CD drive plus a 9000A integrated amplifier.

The 9000CDT and the 9000A integrated amplifier have a very clean and fresh appearance and share a similar design with a full colour IPS LCD screen on both models.

The 9000CDT is a significant step up from the 6000CDT in build, design and sonics. Our listening tests showed the 9000CDT to offer a more expansive sound picture, delivering a more convincing holographic image with greater density and depth, a rich tone, and a smooth presentation. This level of sound quality is rare at this price point of £999.

The 9000A amplifier chassis is of a heavy aluminium construction and offers a real step up from the 8300A. The new premium design, incorporating a full colour 4.3” screen which includes an optional digital VU meter display to add a retro appearance.

This is a flexible unit which offers both digital and analogue inputs and includes a new MM or MC phono stage, a DAC built around the Sabre ESS 9038PRO DAC chip for streaming, and a headphone amplifier.

Custom specified 320VA toroidal transformer, dual mono construction ensures the amplifier maintains firm control of the music with excellent dynamic range.

The 9000A can be configured as a dedicated Integrated, a pre- or a power amplifier, this high level of flexibility allows the unit to adapt to system changes over time.

This Class A/B amplifier delivering 100 wpc/8 ohms, 150 wpc/4 ohms, produces a sound way above its price point. A very transparent and holographic sound stage offering a taste of the high end for a very reasonable investment at £1999.

Musical Event no. 6 – 3 December 2022. A review

We hosted two sessions of this Musical Event that was different to those we have done before. It was a live music event, a collaboration with Crescent Records in their beautiful recording space in Swindon.

We heard 3 superb musicians play two arrangements of tunes that were recorded by Damon Sawyer, Crescent Records recording engineer. Over the course of the two session 4 tracks were recorded which included a couple of a retakes to some of them.

A trio consisting of piano, acoustic bass, and drums was chosen for this event as these instruments cover a wide range of the audible spectrum we listen to. Damon took a lot of care pre-setting some of the microphones prior to our sessions and explained in some detail how he had selected the different microphones for each application. In all 14 microphones were used in this recording, including 2 ambient microphones. The majority were used on the drums, with just a stereo pair on the piano and single microphone for the upright bass.

We explained how we met Damon through his inquiry into noise reduction techniques such as the ground cables and power cords from GutWire Cables, plus the chassis noise reduction components from HRS. An interest from the professional music industry in these techniques is unusual in itself but Damon’s enthusiastic response to our sound, and to the effects of the components he now employs within his recording studio. The addition of these components has had a dramatic influence on his sound, and the way he mixes and masters his recordings. From this work came the idea for this Musical Event whereby we could compare a quickly produced first master on a CD-R with the music the audience had just listened to live.

During the sound check stage, our guests were able to hear a bit of the trio playing and watch Damon balancing and checking EQ prior to the first take. During the recording all guests sat in the studio and were asked to be as quiet as possible.

Whilst Damon was working on the first mixes of the recording guests were able to relax and talk amongst themselves. After 45 minutes a first mix CD-R was available to play through our replay system. With a little trepidation at this point, I am pleased to report that the replay of the recording through our audio system set up acquitted itself magnificently, and compared extremely well with what was just heard in concert.

Before the afternoon session started Alex was able to demonstrate to the musicians their contribution on the recording and they listened intently to the two tracks in their entirety. The second session in the afternoon went equally well and another two tracks were laid down, mixed, and played back.

Interesting discussions followed on the components in The Audio Consultants audio system, and we were asked to demonstrate the effectiveness of the HRS chassis noise reduction products and, separately, the effect of the GutWire Consummate Ground cable. The sound benefits with both these different techniques in place were easily heard and appreciated by the guests.

The feedback from our guests was very positive commenting on how much they had enjoyed the event and found it very informative, entertaining and enjoyable. It became clear that the 3-hour sessions planned were ambitious and a little too short for all the presentations, the recordings, playback, and the following discussions. Due to the enthusiastic response to this concept, we will repeat this idea with more time within a day devoted to each session.

The Audio Consultants Musical Event No 6. A new session added

The Audio Consultants will be hosting their Musical Event No. 6 at the Crescent Records, Swindon, Wiltshire on Saturday 3 December 2022 - and now Sunday 4 December 2022.

We have now sold out both sessions on 3 December. Due to continuing demand, we are now offering a further session on Sunday 4 December from 10am to 1pm.

This will be a quite different Musical Event to those we have previously hosted in that visitors will be able to see and hear a recording of a small jazz trio take place at Crescent Records in their beautiful large space and then witness how recording engineer Damon Sawyer will mix and master that recording in his mastering suite. The final mix will be burned to a CDR which will then be played back in the same studio using an audio system set up by The Audio Consultants. At a later date, all attendees will be sent a CD of the recordings done during the day.

There will be two sessions on Saturday: morning from 10am until 1pm; afternoon from 2pm to 5pm now fully booked, tickets are now available for the third session on Sunday 4 December from 10am until 1pm.

Each session will cost £20 per person to include snacks and beverages, and a CD. Please book your tickets via Eventbrite.

UK Audio Show 2022 – A Review

With the same Worcester Suite as we had last year, we again produced an excellent sound with our systems using the two sets of loudspeakers we featured. Many visitors stayed a good while, some revisiting during the two days. We were grateful for many compliments on our sound. Many said that we were one of the best sounds at the show. Some even volunteered “the best by a county mile” and were pleased we were not playing music overly loud and upfront. Attendance at this Show was significantly up on last year, and there were many more exhibitors. Overall, an excellent weekend.

The Ophidian Voodoo loudspeakers teamed very well with the new Luxman L-507Z amplifier driven by the new Ayre CX-8 CD player. The sound was large and spacious with an elegant, natural tonal balance; unforced and with powerful dynamics when required. Their large cabinets were no impediment to delivering a holographic sound picture well beyond their boundaries and amply filling the large space. The Ayre CX-8 CD player was much admired for its balanced sound, playing all genres of music exceedingly well, especially considering its achievable price point.

In the afternoon, we switched to Ayre EX-8 2.0 integrated amplifier and the excellent Aqua Acoustics La Diva/La Scala CD combination. This system attracted the attention of many listeners, and the many photographers and videographers who seemed enthralled enough to revisit the room a few times. This combination also worked well when the Voodoos were substituted with the renowned Kudos Titan T707 loudspeakers.

The Sunday opening system was the La Diva/La Scala CD combination with the excellent AVM Ovation A6.3 integrated amplifier driving the Titan T707 loudspeakers. This was a popular sound as many remembered the AVM/Titan 707s from last year’s UK Audio Show. The AVM amplifier drove these very well and was able to deliver the speed and dynamics set by the Aqua Acoustic CD playing combination, one the major appealing characteristics of this brand. Fast rhythmically and fast dynamically. In the afternoon we switched back to the Ophidian Voodoo which also responded well to the drive of the AVM Ovation 6.3 amplifier.

The new HRS EXR audio stand was admired for its minimal and elegant simplicity. Discussions around the HRS chassis noise control products were of interest for those that were not so familiar with this unique technology.

The Puritan Audio Studio Master Special Edition mains purifier with a full set of GutWire power cords attracted much interest, as did the Synchrony Cube signal cables used throughout the systems demonstrated. There is no doubt the Furutech enhanced Studio Master with the heavily screened GutWire power cords contributed to the sound in our room, countering the negative effects from the wide fluctuations in voltages and the RFI that occur at such shows. Our static display of these provoked many interesting discussions.

UK Audio Show 2022

The Audio Consultants will be exhibiting at the UK Audio Show 2022 on the weekend of 8 and 9 October in the Worcester Suite on the 1st Floor at the Staverton Park Hotel, Daventry.

Amplification will centre on two new integrated models: the Ayre Acoustics EX-8 2.0 and the Luxman L-507Z . We will also demonstrate the AVM Ovation 6.3 , the flagship integrated model from this renowned German brand.

The speakers will include the Kudos Titan T707 as they were so well received last year, plus the new reference speaker from UK manufacturer Ophidian , the Voodoo . Both floor standing models have exceptional specifications and build quality and are able to energise large spaces with ease.

Harmonic Resolution Systems has introduced a new entry level equipment support called the EXR Audio Stand . This system is unique in its asymmetric design adding significant rigidity to the simple frame. For the first time, this stand incorporates integral shelves bringing the overall cost down to a new affordable price point for the brand. The next level SXR Frame and Isolation Bases will also be used.

Mains distribution will be controlled by Puritan Audio Laboratories Studio Master Purifier, the Special Edition variant designed exclusively for The Audio Consultants, and GutWire Cables power cords. GutWire Cables interconnects and speaker cables will be selected for the signal paths.

New Luxman L-507Z Integrated Amplifier

This new model from Luxman essentially replaces the L-507AXII and the L-590A Class A integrated amplifiers. This unit is the introduction to their latest Z Series of amplification incorporating their very latest developments. The major development is of their new LIFES feedback engine.

The LIFES version 1.0 (Luxman Integrated Feedback Engine System) amplification feedback engine replaces their existing Luxman ODNF (Only Distortion Negative Feedback) circuit that has been used on all their previous equipment, in different incarnations, since 1999, hence an important and significant development for Luxman. This has been designed for both sonic accuracy and, more importantly, musicality.

The design is one of going back to first principles using simulation technology and detailed research. Luxman went to great lengths to audition specially selected components for this project. The number of paralleled elements has been reduced from the ODNF design, whilst dramatically improving musicality and sonic performance that goes way beyond its class.

There is a balanced headphone output to maximise sound quality, giving a separate ground for left and right channels through a single 4.4 mm connection, as well as a more traditional, single ended 6.3 mm (¼ inch) jack.

A useful aid is the digital volume readout between the VU meters as well as the traditional rotary volume control to assist with accurate volume settings.

New EXR Audio Stand from Harmonic Resolution Systems

HRS has launched a new high performance audio stand which is a minimalist design with infinite modularity allowing it to be expanded vertically and horizontally for future needs. Its unique and revolutionary feature is its enhanced rigidity from an asymmetrically designed frame which adds 40% stiffness to its simple construction.

There is an EXR plinth built in at every level allowing this stand to be used without additional isolation base requirements. This EXR plinth is developed from the E1 isolation base made from a highly compressed composite resin material of great rigidity. Struts are available at 6”, 8”, 10” and 12” lengths and the stands are available in black or silver anodised aluminium.

The EXR Audio Stand was 5 years in development and a principal goal was to bring it in at 30% lower price than the existing RXR frame system, allowing the HRS low noise system to become available to a wider market.

Aqua Acoustic quality formula DAC

After being totally convinced by the high level of sound quality that Aqua Acoustic Quality products create from CD replay with their La Diva Mk2 transport and the La Scala Mk2 Optologic DAC, we have recently received our Formula xHD Rev 2 DAC.

The Formula is their reference DAC and, like the other aqua models, is a digital filter-less DAC. They are convinced that, despite the measurements showing that upsampling/oversampling DACs can be superior, they are rarely able to produce a sound with the same emotional and realistic results.

The Formula DAC is the first in the Aqua’s production to have this proprietary D/A conversion system, that they call Optologic. This is now implemented in the La Scala Mk2 and, because of the very favourable reaction to these Aqua products from our customers, we decided to invest in the Formula DAC.

All Aqua Acoustic Quality products require a very long burn-in time compared to other brands we represent. This is of the order of 500+ hours. Whilst the new Formula has not had anything approaching that number at the time of writing, it is clear this has the characteristic Aqua sound, and it is already showing the potential of very superior sonic qualities. The sense of scale, the rhythmic speed, and the ability to hear into the musical interpretations are all there. A high level of transparency and low colouration means every performer’s nuances are revealed accurately.

Once fully run in we will be doing a close comparison to the La Scala Mk2 DAC and report on the differences. The Formula is a totally solid state design whereas the La Scala incorporates a pair of ECC81 valves in the output stages.

Musical Event No 5 – June 2022. A Review

Our second 2-day Event this year at the Crowne Plaza, Reading East was equally well attended, with most visitors arriving early and staying all day. Some travelled long distances, one taking about 2.5 hours from the west Midlands, for which we are very grateful. Quite a few visited us for the second time. During the break for refreshments, interesting and involved discussions took place amongst the attendees around the coffee machines.

This Event focussed on more affordable audio systems, and a vinyl replay comparison between the DS Audio optical cartridge system and a traditional Luxman moving coil design . The cartridge comparison proved to be illuminating; the general consensus was that the DS-003 was more revealing on finest details and was faster on rhythmic transients, whilst the Luxman LMC-5 , which was also excellent at delivering large scale sound pictures, was marginally warmer in tone and more forgiving on brighter sounding LPs.

The speakers used were the Wharfedale Elysian 4 and the Amphion Argon 7LS . Both speakers managed to generate wide and very deep soundstages in a large space (approximately 45 sq m) using either the Hegel H390 and the AVM 30.3 Series pre- and dual mono amplification. The Elysian 4 with the AVM amplification would be expected to fill such a space but the Argon 7LS, with either amplifier, was the surprise for everyone in that its smaller cabinet size did not limit it soundstage, nor its bass extension and dynamic impact with large scale orchestral or jazz recordings.

The CD players used were the AVM CD 30.3 (£2500) and the Audio Analogue Drive and DAC combination (£5750). Both gave a remarkable insight into a true high-end sound for their price points. The AA combo was considered a better all-round player, but the AVM CD 30.3 did not disappoint in either system, offering a sound way above its price point.

We played a great variety of music and visitors were free to play their own albums which meant that all genres were covered to include Michael Jackson, Nils Lofgren, Cassandra Wilson and esoteric jazz all making contributions. Live recordings such "We Want Miles" and "Gil Evans Project: Live AT Jazz Standard" impressed for their natural, large scale, and exceptionally dynamic sound. In fact "Davenport Blues" (by Bix Beiderbecke; arr. Gil Evans 1959 from "Lines of Color"ASBN 0133 artistShare) felt so much like a large jazz ensemble live in the room, our visitors spontaneously clapped at the end. Just what a Musical Event should be about!

The Audio Consultants Musical Event No 5 – 25-26 June 2022

Following the success of the Musical Event No.4, The Audio Consultants will be hosting Musical Event No 5 at the same venue the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Reading East at Winnersh Triangle on the Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 June.

The presentations will be between 10am and 5pm on Saturday, and between 10am and 4pm on Sunday in the Sandhurst Suite . This proved to be an excellent space for the audio systems we featured at the May Event, allowing for a more comfortable and controlled listening experience for visitors.

This Musical Event will focus on two superb turntables: the Nottingham Analogue AceSpace Deck with the DS Audio DS-003 optical cartridge ; the Luxman PD-151 turntable fitted with their LMC-5 cartridge and E-250 phono stage .

The amplification duties will be split between the Hegel H390 integrated amplifier and the AVM PA30.3 pre-amplifier with the matching MA30.3 dual mono amplifiers . Both these designs offer exceptional sound and value for money.

The loudspeakers will be the Wharfedale Elysian 4 and the Amphion Argon 7LS , which create a sound quality and sound stage way above their price points.

We will also be using the Innuos Zenith Mk3 CD/Streamer for a comparison with ripped music files and network streaming against the AVM CD30.3 CD playe r . This comparison proved to be informative and educational during our last Musical Event.

The Special Edition of the Puritan Audio PSM 1512 made exclusively for The Audio Consultants will again be the hub of the mains distribution. These Studio Master mains purification systems not only reduce noise and increase transparency, but also enlarge the holographic sound stage, and greatly enhance dynamics and rhythmic pace.

HRS SXR frames and M3X2 bases installation

A long-standing client of ours recently upgraded his audio equipment support. The components consist of a Metronome CD transport and DAC with separate power supply, an Audio Research pre-amplifier connected to two Pass Labs pure Class A mono amplifiers. The loudspeakers are Martin Logan hybrid models. The previous supports were Mana custom stands.

The new HRS SXR frames with M3X2 isolation bases were selected to reduce the noise floor and to maximise the performance of these very high-level audio components.

The SXR fram e is a 2 levels high and two levels wide modular arrangement. This design is less imposing on the room aesthetics than a 4 or 5 level tall equipment support. The large Pass Labs mono amplifiers are supported by SXR amplifier frames with M3X2 isolation bases fitted with the new G7 footers designed specifically for such heavy amplifiers.

The client chose silver SXR frames with black M3X2 bases which is an unusual combination. Given the finish and the style of the components in this system, this combination works exceedingly well and gives an elegant and sophisticated look to the entire system.

HRS Nimbus Assemblies are employed under every component and the appropriate DPX Damping Plate on top of each chassis completes the chassis noise reduction system and complements the isolation provided by the M3X2 base.

All the signal cables and power cords are from GutWire Cables and are of commensurate quality for the components in the system. Two GutWire Ground Cable s are used: a Consummate Ground into the Audio Research pre-amplifier and a Ultimate Ground into the Metronome DAC. The benefit of using a second ground cable into the DAC was very audible in terms of further noise reduction and increased holography.

Room tuning from Acustica Applicata consists of DAADs for corner treatments, several Volcanos either side of the speakers and a Halifax between and behind the speakers. (The Volcanos and Halifax were installed after the HRS frames and bases and are not show in these photos). The control excess bass energy and enhance sound stage depth.

“All is sounding very good. More detail seems to be coming through now it has been plugged in for a week. The nice thing is it’s not overly “hifi” in-your-face detail, but low-level details that make listening more enjoyable and relaxing and adds to the stage and space around instruments.

Most notably I think is the quiet b ackground and the difference between soft and loud is stunning. There is almost that hush you get in a good live performance. That brings things alive. Something not many systems, or performers for that matter, can do I suspect. It’s the little subtleties that make it more engaging and realistic. I have just played a disc I know well, and it is a particularly good recording and I have never heard it sound this good.”

Musical event no. 4 – a review

We had a very successful 2-day Event in May at the Crowne Plaza with a very good attendance and excellent reception to the musical presentations. Many stayed for several hours, some all day, with good discussions between the playlists which many found enjoyable, informative, and educational. Some had travelled long distances, from Norfolk and Warwickshire, for which we were extremely grateful for their efforts.

The comparisons between Luxman and Aqua CD players, the AVM and Luxman amplifiers and the Kudos Titan and Eggleston Works loudspeakers were well received. Over the 2 days we also demonstrated the differences between Streaming from subscription services, CD rips, and a physical CD. Everyone found this to be very revealing and for some surprising.

The sessions were very relaxed, the venue and general hotel environment were appreciated by all visitors. We will be hosting our Musial Event No. 5 in the same venue on the weekend of 25 and 26 June with a different set of systems and components. More information on this to be published shortly.

GutWire Cables - New Cube Series signal cables

GutWire Cables have recently upgraded their first level of interconnects and speaker cables. The principal change is a replacement of the insulation from polyethylene to Teflon, known for its superior effect on sound. A slightly purer copper used for the conductors adds further sonic benefits. The uplift in sound quality is significant and the models are now called Synchrony Cube and Congruence Cube.

Whilst recognisable still as the Synchrony or Congruence sound, there is an audible gain from these previous popular models, in increased transparency and improved holography. These are very much part of the GutWire Cables characteristics, but the Cube Series takes these to a higher level. An extremely linear and wide bandwidth with no emphasis to any particular frequencies. The renowned natural tonal balance is further enhanced with 100% Mylar shielding and damping using their unique natural minerals. Dynamics and rhythmic speed portrayed realistically but without exaggeration.

GutWire cables are known for creating wide and deep sound pictures. These upgrades take this Cube Series models to a higher sound level at realistic prices, offering more attractive options to an already impressive range of interconnects and speaker cables.

The Audio Consultants Musical Events No 4 and No 5 – 2022

The Audio Consultants will be hosting two Musical Events at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Reading East at Winnersh Triangle.

The first of these, Musical Event No. 4 , will be on the Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 May 2022 in the Sandhurst Suite between 10am and 5pm. This will largely feature systems that we had an exceptional response to at the UK Audio Show 2021 last October. This quality venue will allow for a more comfortable and controlled listening experience for our visitors.

This Musical Event will focus on two superb CD players offered by Luxman with their reference D-10X CD player and the excellent combination from Aqua with their new La Diva Mk2 transport and the La Scala Mk2 Optologic DAC .

We will also be using the Innuos Statement CD/Streamer for a comparison with ripped music files and network streaming.

The amplification duties will be split between the AVM A6.3 integrated amplifier and the Luxman L-509X integrated amplifier. Both these designs have an above average proportion of Class A from a Class A/AB principle.

The loudspeakers will be the Kudos Titan 707 , which were exceptionally well received at the UK Audio Show , and the Eggleston Works Oso . The latter is the larger version of the Emma EVO offering a more authoritative sound with a lower bass extension and greater weight to the sound.

All the signal cables, ground cables, and the power cords will from GutWire Cables , with digital cables from the extensive range from AudioQuest .

The HRS and Lateral Audio equipment supports will provide good isolation from acoustic feedback improving image stability, dynamic speed, and overall naturalness of tone.

Puritan Audio Special Edition mains purifiers

We embarked on a development project with Puritan Audio Laboratories to upgrade their excellent mains purification products. The prime reason was to enable them to be used with audiophile power cords that utilise quality UK plugs such as those from Furutech, AudioQuest, and others.

The grip of the standard issue sockets fitted would not hold securely these audiophile plugs, which are often used with thicker, stiffer power cords. After two years, the development programme is complete. We now offer these as Special Edition versions to all Puritan Audio products from the Power Strips to the Studio Master Purifiers.

These are available exclusively from The Audio Consultants.

The upgrade to the Furutech FT-UKS chassis sockets and the FI-33 high current inlet IEC has not only solve the grip issue but it has had the additional benefit of a major uplift to the sound quality. Close listening tests between the standard issue models and the Special Edition variants is immediately apparent. The sonic improvements are between 50% and 80% over that already experienced with the standard Puritan mains purification products in the audio system.

The most noticeable changes are to the sense of scale and the frequency bandwidth. The sound stage is enlarged in all dimensions and bass is not only more extended but has more texture. Clarity is increased so that finest details are resolved readily, and images are more focussed. Dynamics and transients are notably faster.

The Special Edition versions of the Power Strips and the Studio Master Purifiers are available with Furutech FI-E30 Schuko sockets to order.

All Puritan Audio mains purifiers models are available for a home trial: the Special Edition version with the Furutech upgrades, and the standard version without.

The new AVM 30.3 Series

AVM introduced a new entry level range of products in 2021 which has been completely redesigned using their new AI software.

Consisting of a new state of the art range of amplification , a CD player and a Phono Stage , all incorporating trickle down technology from the Evolution and Ovation series.

The range centres on an integrated amplifier and a pre-amp/dual mono amplifier combination. The mono amplifiers are a compact, half size module. All the amplification stages are dual mono designed with two transformers. DACs are included in the integrated and pre-amplifier to support streaming.

The CD player includes a digital interface; the small Phono Stage comes with separate MC cartridge loading modules.

All are housed in exquisite quality casework and manufactured entirely in Germany. The sound quality is way above that expected for the price. Familiar AVM sound: high Class A content from a Class A/AB design, a large and holographic sound stage, high current delivery for fast dynamics and a rich and authoritative tone.

In our auditions, the 30.3 Series product is quite often selected over a more expensive alternative branded component. Please book a demonstration or a home audition to hear for yourself.

Success at the UK Audio Show 2021

The first UK audio show since 2019 was extremely successful for us. Both Saturday and Sunday had good footfall and our room was constantly busy right through to closing time with many coming back multiple times. We achieved an exceptionally good sound in our room for the entire two days of the show.

We offered two listening experiences using both CD and vinyl as sources. The first focusing on the Luxman D-10X Reference CD player into either the Luxman L-590A Class A amplifier or the AVM A 6.2 Master Edition amplifier. Both amplifiers drove the Kudos Titan T707 loudspeakers with ease and, considering the space was 60 sq m, produced a very large sound stage. The sound was way beyond the boundaries of the speakers and very deep. Height delineation between instruments and voices was very clearly demonstrated.

The Kudos Titan T707 loudspeakers were much admired as were the Eggleston Works Emma EVO . Whilst a different price point, half that of the T707s, the Emma EVO performed well in a room larger than they would normally be used in.

The second big attraction was the new DS Audio DS-003 optical cartridge. This was deemed one of the best heard at the show and partnered with the Nottingham Analogue Ace SpaceDeck produced large and very dynamic sound pictures.

We were using the Special Edition of the Puritan Audio PSM 1512 made exclusively for The Audio Consultants. With the large voltage swings experienced at the hotel during the show, this undoubtedly contributed to the holographic sound we consistently achieved during the two days.

All the signal cables, the ground cables, and the power cords were from GutWire Cables , again contributing to the overall transparency and large sound stage.

The HRS and Lateral Audio equipment supports provided good isolation from acoustic feedback improving image stability, dynamic speed, and overall naturalness of tone.

We were frequently complimented on the sound we achieved; many were kind enough to deem it the best sound at the show. Even some industry and fellow exhibitors were generous enough to say the same.

The Audio Consultants at the UK Audio Show 2021

We will be exhibiting at the forthcoming UK Audio Show 2021 9-10 October at the De Vere Staverton Estate, Daventry, NN11 6JT.

We can be found in the Worcester Suite situated on the 1st Floor.

Being a leading independent consultancy specialising in high quality 2-channel audio system we will be using both vinyl and digital replay as sources.

Brands on show

We will showcase the latest optical cartridge from DS Audio the DS-003 . The cartridge will be mounted in a Nottingham Analogue Ace SpaceDeck turntable and arm. This cartridge has its own version of a phone stage, an equaliser, and the total package retails for £5000. A very different take on the traditional cartridge MM and MC designs, offering an exceptional sound at this price.

In addition, we will have the Luxman PD-151 turntable and the new Luxman LMC-5 MC cartridge combined with a Luxman E-250 phono pre-amplifier.

We firmly believe in physical discs for optimal sound from digital formats, and we will have the latest entry level design from AVM the CD 30.3 and the flagship Luxman D-10X CD players .

We will demonstrate streaming by using the Innuos Zenith Mk III from both its internal SSD hard drive and from subscription services. After auditioning many of the foremost brands for streaming we have settled on Innuos and AVM as two that provide a sound quality close to that achievable with a conventional CD. The Zenith Mk III offers ease of use, excellent component count and build quality.

The amplification will feature two new integrated amplifiers: the AVM Ovation A 6.2 Master Edition and the Luxman L-590AX pure Class A . These offer true high-end sound at their respective price points of £6500 (A 6.2 ME) and £7000 (L-590AX).

Record cleaner demonstrations

The new version of the Audiodesksysteme PRO X ultrasonic vinyl cleaner will be on display with upgraded top plate to make it easier to use, quieter fans and the ability to clean 7” singles. Visitors will have the opportunity to hear the improvements by cleaning a LP of their own and hear the very positive effect of this, not only with a used LP but also brand new and previously cleaned LPs. There will be limited times when we can demonstrate the benefits of this ultrasonic cleaner as we need to allow other components to be played through the audio system being used.

Speakers

The speakers will include the Kudos Titan T707 (£15000), the multi award winning floor standing model which offers precise imaging, very tight, extended bass from the isobaric loaded bass drivers, exceptional sound staging and speed. The new speaker from US manufacturer Eggleston Works the Emma EVO (£7500) offers an exceptional sonic performance, build quality, and style, for their price point.

The equipment support and chassis resonance control will be from Harmonic Resolution Systems, with a background in vibration control gained from the aerospace industry, they are world renowned for producing the lowest noise floors. The innovatively designed RXR frame and the new entry level E1 Base bases, offer a more affordable entry point to their range. We will also be showcasing the Lateral Audio LAS-4 Concert stand with their aesthetically stylish design.

GutWire Cables

All signal cables, ground cables and power cords will be from the Canadian company GutWire Cables . These feature an extremely dense screen design and ultra-high quality, solder-free connectors. This results in very low noise, negligible colouration with no hint of compression, and one of the largest and realistic soundstages we have heard.

We will be using the new Puritan Laboratories PSM 1512 mains distributer fitted with Furutech UK sockets which is an exclusive design for The Audio Consultants .

Room acoustics will be controlled with the Acustica Applicate DAAD acoustic devices. HRS Nimbus chassis noise reduction products will be used throughout our systems.
